Singapore boasts its only sake brewery, located in Jurong, founded by Reuben Oh and Yumika Yamamoto. Despite the difficulties of sake production in Singapore’s climate, the duo has successfully created unique, locally-inspired sake varieties, including a pulut hitam (black glutinous rice) sake. Their innovative approach has garnered recognition in Japan, winning them accolades in international sake competitions. The brewery’s sake is now featured in prestigious Michelin-starred restaurants, demonstrating its quality and appeal. Oh and Yamamoto have also cultivated a dedicated local following. Their success highlights a growing appreciation for Japanese brewing traditions with a distinctly Singaporean twist.
