Pork consumption in Peru reached a historic high in 2025, exceeding 11 kilograms per capita, coinciding with the annual National Chicharron Day. The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) reported a national pork production of 289,000 tons for the year. This production level was supported by a pig population reaching 3,697,000 animals. The record consumption figures indicate a growing demand for pork products within the country. Midagri attributes the increase to both increased production capacity and consumer preference. This data highlights the significance of the pork industry to Peru’s agricultural sector and food security. The annual celebration of Chicharron Day, a traditional fried pork dish, likely contributed to the increased demand.
