The National Ombudsman has criticized the digital toll system of the Blankenburgtunnel on the A24 highway for being confusing and inaccessible. As the first electronic toll system in the Netherlands without physical booths, it relies on cameras to register license plates. Users must either opt for automatic payments or pay online within 72 hours, but many fail to do so due to unclear roadside signage. Ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen noted that many drivers are unaware they are on a toll road. Furthermore, the system excludes those who are not digitally literate or lack internet banking. Since December, the government has issued payment reminders with a 9-euro administrative fee, followed by fines for continued non-payment. Van Zutphen urged Minister Karremans to ensure government services remain accessible to all citizens, not just those proficient with digital tools.
