New regulations across the European Union will soon require online retailers to provide a clear and easily accessible button or function for customers to return purchases within 14 days of receipt. The move, enforced by authorities like the Dutch Autoriteit Consument & Markt (ACM), aims to simplify the return process and make it as easy as making the initial purchase. While retailers have flexibility in the design of the button, it must clearly indicate its purpose – allowing consumers to cancel their order. Consumers already had a 14-day right of withdrawal for online purchases, but this new rule focuses on making exercising that right more straightforward. The ACM specifies requirements for the button’s naming, visibility, data input, and confirmation process, emphasizing ease of use and avoiding unnecessary hurdles for consumers. The regulations are based on a new EU directive and will be uniformly applied throughout the bloc.
