A study conducted by the National Science and Technology Council in Taiwan reveals a widespread trend of parents enrolling their children in extracurricular activities. The research indicates that three out of every five first-grade students in Taiwan participate in talent cultivation classes. On average, these children begin these classes at the age of five, driven by parents’ aspirations to give them a competitive edge. The study suggests a significant emphasis on early childhood education beyond the formal school curriculum in Taiwan. This early start raises discussions about the pressures placed on young children and the potential impact on their overall development. The National Science and Technology Council’s findings highlight a prevalent “starting line” mentality among parents in Taiwan, seeking to provide their children with opportunities for enrichment from a very young age.
