Indonesia’s Trade Minister, Budi Santoso, has announced plans to aggressively market “ant sugar”—crystal coconut sugar—from Banyumas, Central Java, internationally. This unique product, known locally as “gula semut,” is gaining recognition for its quality and distinct production process. The Minister highlighted the potential for significant export growth, targeting key markets and aiming for global dominance. Government support will focus on improving production standards, ensuring consistent quality, and streamlining export procedures. Currently, production is largely driven by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Increased international demand is expected to benefit these local producers and boost the regional economy of Banyumas. The initiative seeks to capitalize on growing global demand for natural sweeteners and position Indonesia as a leading supplier.
