After an eight-year silence, the character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon has returned to *The Simpsons*. The popular convenience store manager, who works at the Kwik-E-Mart in Springfield, had not been voiced since 2017 due to criticism surrounding the stereotypical depiction of the character. Previously voiced by white American actor Hank Azaria, Apu is now voiced by Indian-American actor Sunil Malhotra. This change comes after increased scrutiny regarding representation and diversity in Hollywood, particularly following the death of George Floyd in 2020 and the 2017 documentary *The Problem with Apu*, which highlighted harmful stereotypes of South Asian characters in pop culture. Malhotra and Indian-American actress Janina Gavankar, who now voices Apu’s wife Manjula, expressed their excitement about the role. The creators of *The Simpsons* hope this change will contribute to a more authentic and respectful portrayal of Indian characters.
