Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn has extended its delivery service suspension, initially expected to last until today, now at least until Friday, forcing customers to seek alternatives. As the largest online grocery delivery service in Nederland with an estimated annual revenue of €2.3 billion, Albert Heijn’s disruption is causing a shift in consumer behavior. Competitors like Picnic report tens of thousands of new customers, while Jumbo and Plus are increasing their delivery staff to meet demand. For some, like Compliancewise director Taco van Voorst, the halt is an inconvenience requiring a return to traditional shopping. Others, such as Annemarie de Hoogt, who has a visual impairment, rely on the service as a necessity and are reluctantly switching to other providers. Experts suggest that the shift to competitors may be temporary, as online grocery customers tend to be more loyal than those shopping in physical stores.
