The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new data indicating that children under five years old are significantly more vulnerable to illnesses caused by unsafe food. These young children represent only 9% of the global population, yet account for nearly one-third of all foodborne disease cases. The WHO estimates that children in this age group face almost three times the risk of contracting foodborne illnesses compared to older children and adults. This heightened vulnerability is attributed to factors such as developing immune systems and dietary habits. The report highlights the urgent need for improved food safety measures to protect this particularly susceptible population. Further details regarding the specific causes and preventative strategies are expected to be released by the WHO in subsequent reports. The findings were initially reported by The Independent Uganda.
