A new international study of 19 countries reveals a strong link between visiting bodies of water and improved mental well-being. The research indicates that simply being near water – such as oceans, lakes, rivers, or canals – has a positive psychological effect. However, the benefits are notably amplified when individuals feel secure enough to enter the water. This suggests active engagement with aquatic environments yields greater gains than passive observation. Researchers found these benefits were consistent across diverse cultures and geographies. The study highlights the potential for “blue space” interventions to support mental health initiatives globally. These findings underscore the importance of access to and safe interaction with natural water sources for public wellness.
