The United Nations has reaffirmed its support for the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a “pillar of international criminal justice,” despite recent US sanctions targeting an ICC official, Abdoulaye Seye. The sanctions bring the total number of ICC personnel targeted by Washington to nine, including prosecutors and staff. The ICC strongly condemned the US actions as a blatant attack on the independence of an impartial judicial institution, arguing the measures undermine the rule of law and could hinder victims’ access to justice. The decision by the US comes as the ICC investigates alleged war crimes, particularly related to the conflict in Gaza. Both the US and Israel, not parties to the Rome Statute, do not recognize the Court’s jurisdiction. US officials have consistently criticized the ICC, labeling it “corrupt” and “politicized,” and objecting to investigations into individuals from non-member states.
