Uganda continues to grapple with a critical shortage of blood, contributing to persistently high maternal mortality rates. Despite improvements, the country currently records 189 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, according to the World Health Organization. While donor recruitment efforts are ongoing, officials acknowledge the need to address systemic issues hindering consistent blood availability. World Blood Donor Day on June 14th highlighted this ongoing challenge. The focus is shifting from simply attracting donors to resolving structural problems within the blood supply chain. These gaps impede access to life-saving blood transfusions for mothers, impacting national health goals. Addressing these deficiencies is crucial for further reducing maternal mortality in Uganda.
