This article details how non-state institutions are undermining Taiwan’s identity through the imposition of subordinating terminology, even in contexts that appear non-political. The author, Nilufer Mistry Sheasby, argues that conventional diplomatic methods are inadequate to address this issue. Instead, a comprehensive strategy is proposed involving coordinated efforts between the Taiwanese government and private sector entities to actively contest these naming practices. This includes mobilizing pressure from relevant stakeholders to influence decisions and, when a reversal of damaging terminology proves unachievable, minimizing any resulting harm to Taiwan. The piece contends that a proactive and multi-faceted approach is required to counter this subtle yet impactful form of subordination affecting Taiwan. Ultimately, the research suggests a need to move “Beyond Exclusion” and actively defend Taiwan’s rightful place on the global stage.
