The critical Rhine River bottleneck at Kaub, a longstanding issue for over three decades, is set for a dredging project intended to increase cargo capacity. The plan focuses on deepening the riverbed by 20 centimeters, potentially allowing vessels to carry an additional 200 tons of cargo. This measure is a response to current low water levels which severely restrict navigation. However, IW-Expert Thomas Puls cautions that this dredging, while helpful, won’t fully resolve the situation. The issue of the Rhine’s navigability during periods of drought remains a significant challenge. While the increased depth offers a partial solution, further measures will likely be needed to ensure reliable river transport in the future. The project is designed to mitigate the impact of historically low water, which is becoming increasingly frequent.
