A new report and 2024 measurements reveal significant disparities in road noise levels among major cities worldwide. Cities in Asia and South Asia exhibit the highest levels of traffic noise pollution, linked to congested roads, older vehicles, and frequent honking. Dhaka, Bangladesh, leads the world at 119 dB, followed by Moradabad, India, and Islamabad, Pakistan. In contrast, cities in Europe and the Middle East benefit from better infrastructure and public transport, resulting in lower noise levels. Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, recorded noise levels between 74-98 dB, with even its lowest measured level exceeding the highest levels found in many European cities, indicating persistent and high noise pollution due to traffic congestion. The study highlights the urgent need for improved urban planning and traffic management to mitigate noise pollution in affected areas.
