Mongolia participated in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2025, with 7,146 students from 191 schools representing 59,900 students nationwide, joining over 760,000 students from 91 countries. The assessment revealed that Mongolian students' performance in science, mathematics, and reading remains below the average of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), ranking 49th out of 91 countries overall. However, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, T. Nyam-Ochir, highlighted a positive trend: students from lower socio-economic backgrounds showed improved performance. These students scored 71 points lower than their more advantaged peers, aligning with the OECD average of 85%. While disparities between urban and rural areas are decreasing, and public and private school performance is equitable, the study showed performance decreases with distance from Ulaanbaatar. Despite an overall drop in socio-economic indicators across PISA-participating countries, Mongolia witnessed progress among its disadvantaged students, while higher-performing students maintained their levels.
