Microsoft Japan recently experimented with a four-day workweek, resulting in a reported increase in productivity. The initiative, dubbed “Work-Life Choice Challenge Summer 2019,” involved giving employees every Friday off during August. The company observed a 40% boost in productivity, measured by sales per employee, compared to the same period the previous year. Additionally, costs related to electricity consumption decreased by 23% and paper printing was reduced by 59%. Microsoft Japan attributes these gains to more focused work habits and streamlined meetings. The experiment also indicated increased employee satisfaction and a better work-life balance. While the program was a limited-time trial, Microsoft is considering implementing similar initiatives in the future.
