The International Parliamentary Union (IPU) has opened a human rights case concerning Member of Parliament E. Bolormaa of Mongolia. The case stems from criminal charges filed against her regarding alleged obstruction of electoral rights, leading to a travel ban imposed in March. The IPU’s Human Rights Committee expressed concern over the case, citing potential violations of due process, freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and parliamentary immunity. The committee also noted the initial classification of the alleged actions as administrative infractions before being escalated to criminal charges. It has urged relevant authorities to lift the travel ban and will submit its findings to the IPU’s Governing Council. The IPU rarely intervenes in cases concerning individual members of national parliaments, highlighting the seriousness of this situation in Mongolia.
