ING customers who rely solely on internet banking will no longer be able to use iDeal for online purchases starting in October, as the system transitions to Wero. The bank states it cannot integrate the new Wero technology with its existing Scanner, a device used for internet banking access, forcing those users to switch to the ING banking app. While the Scanner will remain functional for other banking needs, customers without smartphones or those struggling with mobile apps face limited options. Approximately 2.5 million Dutch adults struggle with digital payments, according to previous research by the Dutch Central Bank. Alternative payment methods such as invoice payments, bank transfers, or credit cards will be necessary for online transactions if webshops or governmental bodies offer them. Wero confirms they are working closely with all banks during the transition and states this is a technical decision made by ING.
