The European Union has clarified its regulations regarding fruit preserves, specifically the distinction between “jam” and “confiture.” Previously, many products commonly referred to as “Marmelade” (jam) in Germany were technically classified as “Konfitüre” (confiture) under EU law. This stemmed from differing sugar content requirements for each designation. The EU has now updated its guidelines, effectively changing what can be legally labeled as “jam” across member states. This means many fruit spreads previously sold as jam in Germany will need to be relabeled as confiture, or reformulate to meet the jam standard. The change impacts common breakfast staples like raspberry, cherry, and plum preserves. Consumers may notice altered product labeling in the future as manufacturers adjust to the new rules.
