The Netherlands’ Employee Insurance Agency (UWV) has commissioned an external investigation into its workplace culture following reports of a hostile environment and excessive workload. The probe, conducted by KPMG, was prompted by concerns raised regarding young trainee physicians in the Amsterdam region experiencing an unsafe work environment, including reports of distressed colleagues and aggressive management. The UWV stated it takes these signals seriously and aims to identify the root causes of the issues. The investigation will occur at multiple locations, including Amsterdam, and is expected to conclude by the end of the year. Contributing factors include staff shortages and pressure to reduce waiting lists, leading to increased demands on trainee doctors who assess disability benefits. A separate investigation is also underway by the Registration Committee for Medical Specialists, which could potentially revoke the UWV’s accreditation to train physicians.
