Polish President Karol Nawrocki decided to revoke Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s state award, the Order of the White Eagle, originally bestowed in 2023 by former President Andrzej Duda. This decision followed Ukraine’s naming of a military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a WWII-era group accused by Poland of massacring tens of thousands of Polish citizens in Volhynia. Zelenskyy responded by returning the Polish honor, along with awards returned by three other Ukrainian officials, to demonstrate solidarity. The UPA is viewed differently in Ukraine, where it is seen as fighting for independence against Soviet, Nazi German, and Polish aggression. Despite the dispute, Zelenskyy expressed openness to continued dialogue with Poland and acknowledged the importance of Polish support during the Russian invasion. President Nawrocki has condemned the naming of the military unit as “outrageous” and “disheartening,” reflecting widespread Polish disapproval.
