Researchers at Zhejiang University have achieved a breakthrough in cancer drug production by genetically engineering yeast to produce vinblastine, a vital but incredibly scarce anticancer medication. Historically, vinblastine has been extracted from the Madagascar periwinkle plant, a process requiring two tonnes of plant material for a single gram of the drug – making it exceptionally expensive. This new method boosts vinblastine production by a factor of one thousand, offering a potential solution to both the high cost and unreliable supply of the medication. The team successfully solved a complex molecular challenge to transform common yeast into an efficient biomanufacturing platform. This development promises to significantly lower the financial burden for patients and ensure greater accessibility to this life-saving treatment. Further research will focus on scaling up production and refining the process for widespread implementation.
