Chinese scientists have discovered a promising alternative to imported natural rubber in a weed native to the Xinjiang region. Known as the rubber dandelion, *Taraxacum kok-saghyz*, the plant produces a milky fluid from its roots remarkably similar to natural rubber. This discovery could significantly reduce China’s substantial reliance on rubber imports, primarily from Southeast Asian countries. The weed thrives in the salty, alkaline soil found at the base of the Tianshan Mountains, presenting a viable growing environment within China. Further development of this resource could bolster China’s domestic rubber production and lessen its vulnerability to global supply chain disruptions. Researchers are optimistic about scaling up cultivation and utilization of this unique plant.
