This year’s World Cup features an expanded format with 48 teams, altering the path to the knockout stage. Traditionally, only the top two teams from each group progressed. However, with the new format, the top two teams from each of the twelve first-round groups will automatically advance. Additionally, the eight best third-placed teams across all groups will also secure a spot in the next round. This change significantly increases the number of teams with a chance to continue competing beyond the group stage. The expansion aims to include more nations and enhance the overall competitiveness of the tournament. This new system provides more opportunities for teams to qualify despite not finishing in the top two of their respective groups.
