Deep within the cloud-covered Ngọc Linh mountains of Vietnam, dedicated individuals are working to protect a rare and valuable ginseng species considered a national treasure. These “forest guardians” live in remote outposts above 2,000 meters, vigilantly safeguarding the ginseng gardens. Their efforts combat poaching, protect the plants from damage by wildlife, and counter speculative harvesting driven by high demand. The guardians essentially act as a living barrier against threats to this important resource. This ginseng is highly prized and its protection is crucial to the local ecosystem and economy. Their work highlights the challenges of preserving biodiversity in remote mountainous regions.
