Acienpol, the Academy of Political and Social Sciences, asserts that Venezuela’s reform to the Organic Law of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) does not sufficiently address political interference. The reform concerns the selection of 32 new magistrates. Acienpol argues the law should completely remove the participation of lawmakers from the Judicial Nominating Committee, the body responsible for choosing the magistrates. Currently, the committee’s composition allows for continued political control over judicial appointments. This lack of complete independence hinders the potential for a truly impartial judiciary. The organization believes full adjustment to relevant standards requires eliminating legislative influence on the nomination process to ensure judicial independence. The reform, as it stands, maintains the existing power dynamics and fails to guarantee an independent selection of magistrates.
