Hernán Gil, a 43-year-old security guard, has become a symbol of hope in Venezuela after being rescued eight days after a devastating earthquake. Working at a shopping center in La Guaira, he was trapped in his guard booth when the eight-story building collapsed. Gil recounts hearing a warning of an earthquake moments before the structure fell, losing consciousness, and then waking to darkness and uncertainty. He experienced numerous aftershocks while barely able to move or breathe, fearing being crushed. Sustaining injuries, he is now recovering in hospital and describes himself as “reborn”. The earthquake’s death toll has risen to 3,342 with 16,470 injured, and tens of thousands remain missing according to various reports, including one compiled by opposition leader Machado’s movement. Gil credits his faith and prayers with helping him endure his ordeal.
