Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was utilized to rectify a misidentification during a recent international friendly match between the United States and Paraguay, serving as a test case for a new protocol. Dutch referee Danny Makkelie initially issued a yellow card to U.S. defender Tim Ream for a foul on Paraguayan player Miguel Almirón. However, VAR intervention revealed Makkelie had mistakenly identified Ream as the player who committed the infraction. The card was subsequently corrected, marking the first instance of this “mistaken identity protocol” being used in a FIFA-sanctioned match. This protocol is slated for full implementation during the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The trial aims to minimize errors stemming from player identification in fast-paced game situations. This demonstration highlights the evolving role of VAR in ensuring fair play and accurate officiating.
