In 1990, Utah embarked on a large-scale ecological restoration project at Strawberry Reservoir, employing a controversial yet effective method: nearly complete fish removal using rotenone. The aim was to reverse environmental decline and revitalize the lake's ecosystem. Following the chemical treatment, native trout were reintroduced to rebuild a healthy food web and bolster recreational fishing opportunities. Today, enhanced barriers and regulations are in place to protect this renewed aquatic environment. This project serves as a case study in proactive freshwater management and the potential benefits of large-scale intervention. The restoration demonstrates a commitment to long-term ecological health. It highlights the challenges and successes of balancing environmental concerns with recreational use.
