The United States Supreme Court has overturned a federal appeals court decision to halt the execution of Christa Pike. The appeals court had temporarily blocked the execution approximately one hour before it was scheduled, seeking to review whether Pike’s history of childhood sexual abuse was adequately considered during sentencing. With the Supreme Court’s ruling, the execution warrant remains valid until midnight local time. Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a crime committed with her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, who received a life sentence. International protests arose regarding Pike’s case, with Amnesty International gathering over 21,000 signatures, arguing she deserves clemency due to past trauma and remorse. This execution would be the first of a woman in Tennessee in over 200 years.
