Finland is exploring the potential of “rewilding” – restoring natural landscapes – as a novel defense strategy along its extensive border with Russia. The concept leverages naturally challenging terrain, such as swamps that can trap tanks and overgrown roads hindering vehicle movement, to create obstacles for potential invaders. This approach stems from a growing global recognition of the defensive benefits offered by undisturbed natural environments. The Finnish government is currently investigating how to strategically implement rewilding initiatives to enhance national security. This strategy aims to utilize the landscape itself as a deterrent and impediment to military advancement. The idea is gaining traction as a cost-effective and environmentally beneficial addition to traditional defense measures. It represents a shift towards utilizing natural barriers for national protection.
