Following the Hamas attacks in Israël on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza launched by Israël – a conflict currently under international investigation for potential genocidal acts – the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) feared for the safety of its archives. Over a period of ten months, the agency secretly organized the transfer of these records to Amman, Jordanie. The clandestine operation was undertaken to preserve the memory of refugees. Once in Amman, the archives underwent a digitization process. This proactive measure aimed to safeguard this vital historical documentation from potential destruction during the ongoing hostilities in Gaza. The relocation ensures the preservation of records detailing the experiences of Palestinian refugees.
