The ongoing war in Ukraine is impacting wildlife, with birds now incorporating fiber optic cables into their nests along the 1200km front line. These cables, used by both Ukrainian and Russian forces to guide drones and resist electronic interference, are becoming entangled in trees and littering fields. Birds are weaving the thin, glittering strands into their nests alongside traditional materials. Two such nests have been sent to the Kyiv War Museum as evidence of this unusual adaptation. The use of fiber optics demonstrates a unique consequence of modern warfare on the natural world. This behavior showcases how animals adapt to human-induced environmental changes, even in active conflict zones. The phenomenon highlights the widespread presence of these cables across the battlefield.
