The Russia-Ukraine war is fundamentally altering the role of attack helicopters in modern warfare. Initially utilized for daring supply missions – notably supporting Ukrainian defenders at Azovstal – and offensive strikes, such as the Belgorod oil depot attack, helicopters proved vulnerable on the front lines. Consequently, their deployment shifted, with a gradual withdrawal from direct combat roles. Helicopters are now increasingly employed as a crucial air defence system, specifically targeting drones. This evolution demonstrates a significant reshaping of military aviation doctrine, prioritizing protection against unmanned aerial vehicles. The conflict highlights the need to adapt to the growing threat posed by drones and re-evaluate the traditional role of attack helicopters.
