Ukraine launched what officials are calling its largest aerial attack on Moscow since the start of the war, targeting oil refineries crucial to the city’s fuel supply. The strikes resulted in 17 injuries across the Moscow region and blanketed parts of the city in thick, black smoke. Residents in the southeastern districts reported a “black rain” falling, leaving dark residue on surfaces, though authorities initially denied the claims before advising residents to close windows and vulnerable populations to evacuate. Russia’s Defense Ministry claims to have intercepted around 1,000 Ukrainian drones and four cruise missiles nationwide, with approximately 200 aimed at Moscow. A separate strike in the Rostov region on an oil depot resulted in one fatality. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated the attacks on Moscow were retaliatory, warning that “if Ukraine burns, Moscow will burn too,” prompting a threat from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of a wider response. The Kapotnya oil refinery in Moscow was hit for the third time this month, and the second time this week.
