Ukrainian forces successfully targeted three Russian warships equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles on August 12th, significantly diminishing Russia’s naval strike capabilities. Before the attack, the Russian Black Sea Fleet possessed eight vessels capable of launching these missiles. Despite the recent strikes, Russia retains at least five such warships. Notably, one of the initially undamaged vessels subsequently suffered damage after hitting a port in Kyiv on August 19th – the cause of this incident is currently under investigation. This reduction in Kalibr-capable ships impacts Russia’s ability to conduct long-range precision strikes from the Black Sea. The attacks demonstrate Ukraine’s growing ability to reach Russian naval assets and disrupt their operations. This represents a strategic blow to Russia’s military posture in the region.
