The United Kingdom is considering selling the crude oil cargo seized from a Russian tanker intercepted in the English Channel. Royal Marines boarded and captured the vessel, part of a “shadow fleet,” earlier this year. Proceeds from the sale of the oil will be directed towards providing financial assistance to Ukraine’s armed forces. This action represents a further step in international efforts to economically pressure Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. The tanker was reportedly carrying crude oil, the exact volume and value of which are still being assessed. Legal mechanisms are being finalized to allow for the sale and transfer of funds. This move aims to directly support Ukraine’s defense capabilities while simultaneously diminishing Russia’s revenue streams.
