A photography workshop in Mardin, southeastern Turkey, is providing analogue photography training to local and migrant children, many of whom are refugees from Syria’s civil war. The Fotohane Darkroom project, meaning “house of photos” in multiple regional languages, was founded in 2024 by two photographers and emphasizes complete creative control for the young participants. Children are involved in every step of the process, from loading film to developing and printing their own photographs. The project aims to offer a creative outlet and a sense of agency to children living in a historically rich but economically challenged region. Many participants, like 13-year-old Yahya and his siblings, fled the conflict in Syria following the rise of Islamic State. Through the lens of these young photographers, the project captures unique perspectives on life near the Turkish-Syrian border.
