A man has been sentenced to 100 years in prison for shooting a police officer at a migrant detention center in Alvarado, Texas, last July 4th. Benjamin Song, 32, and seven accomplices were involved in a protest against then-President Trump’s immigration policies that escalated into violence. The group reportedly set off fireworks and spray-painted graffiti before clashing with ICE personnel and ultimately, local police. An officer was shot in the throat but has since recovered. Song initially fled but was apprehended eleven days later, while his accomplices received sentences ranging from 50 to 70 years for aiding him. The case drew attention from both sides of the political spectrum, with some claiming excessive prosecution and others citing a planned assassination attempt linked to antifa ideology.
