An investigation by Swedish broadcaster SVT has revealed that ten tankers previously owned by Swedish shipping companies are now part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” used to circumvent Western sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine. These vessels, sold by Swedish firms after the invasion began, are actively involved in transporting Russian oil. Erik Hånell, CEO of Stena Bulk, expressed regret over the development, describing it as “very unfortunate.” The shadow fleet allows Russia to continue exporting oil despite international restrictions, obscuring the origin and destination of shipments. This practice undermines the effectiveness of sanctions imposed on Russia. The investigation highlights the challenges in tracking and preventing the resale of vessels to entities seeking to evade sanctions. The findings raise concerns about the potential for further circumvention of trade restrictions.
