The Spanish government has reversed its previous stance and will allow 500 migrant children currently in Ceuta to be relocated to the mainland. This decision follows a large influx of around 70,000 migrants into the Spanish territory of Ceuta, located in North Africa, on July 30th. While the majority of those migrants have since returned to Morocco, Spanish law mandates a duty of care towards unaccompanied minors until they reach adulthood. The initial government position was to return all those who entered illegally, but this has now been modified to address the needs of vulnerable children. This U-turn acknowledges the legal obligation to provide support and care for these young migrants. The move signifies a shift in approach towards the broader migration situation in Ceuta.
