Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, has publicly questioned the sincerity of President Faye’s announced constitutional referendum. Speaking during a party event, Sonko alleged the referendum is a “bluff” intended to stall for time, expressing doubt the government intends to follow through with the process. He urged the opposition to directly request a firm date for the referendum from the President to inform the public. Despite his skepticism, Sonko voiced confidence that citizens would support the proposed new constitution. He further predicted electoral victories for his party in all upcoming elections, including the referendum, local elections, legislative polls, and the 2029 presidential election. The proposed constitutional revision, adopted by the National Assembly last week, continues to fuel political debate within Senegal.
