Australia’s soft plastic recycling infrastructure has expanded significantly, now processing almost three times the volume it did at the height of REDcycle’s operations. Despite this increased capacity, the industry faces a critical challenge: a lack of sufficient consumer participation in collection programs. While processing capabilities have grown, the amount of soft plastic being returned by households remains a limiting factor. Industry experts indicate that boosting consumer buy-in is now the primary obstacle to further growth and maximizing the potential of the recycling scheme. This suggests that investment in infrastructure alone is insufficient; successful recycling relies heavily on consistent public engagement. The current situation highlights a disconnect between available processing power and the supply of recyclable material. Further efforts are needed to educate and incentivize consumers to participate in soft plastic recycling initiatives.
