A growing body of research suggests a correlation between increased social media usage and declining birth rates in Greece. The phenomenon, termed “algorithmic loneliness,” posits that online interactions, while seemingly connecting individuals, can contribute to feelings of isolation and detachment from real-world relationships. This isolation is believed to impact relationship formation and, consequently, decisions about having children. Experts note a demographic shift in Greece, characterized by a significant drop in fertility rates over recent decades. The algorithmic curation of content on social media platforms may exacerbate these trends by reinforcing existing preferences and limiting exposure to diverse perspectives, potentially hindering the development of strong social bonds. Further study is needed to fully understand the complex interplay between technology, social behavior, and demographic changes in the country.
