Four prominent Slovak political figures – Marián Leško, Martin M. Šimečka, Matúš Kostolný, and Tomáš Hudák – have publicly criticized the government’s response to the issue of femicide and domestic violence. During a discussion titled “How to Save Democracy,” the politicians asserted that the government is failing to address the escalating violence against women. They specifically referenced Prime Minister Robert Fico and Police Chief Tibor Gašpar’s perceived dismissive reactions when questioned about the issue, describing Fico as shaking his head and Gašpar as laughing. The group argues that this inaction demonstrates a broader disregard for the rule of law and a willingness to allow systemic issues to fester. They suggest the government’s behavior indicates a potential for larger-scale corruption and a disregard for the welfare of its citizens. The discussion took place on June 24th in Bratislava and a transcript has been released.
