A new study published in *Science* reveals a doubling of summer methane emissions from Siberian permafrost between 2010 and 2023. This increase is primarily attributed to thawing permafrost caused by global warming, creating a dangerous feedback loop where released methane exacerbates the warming trend. While methane is a potent greenhouse gas—far more powerful than CO2—its shorter lifespan in the atmosphere presents an opportunity to slow warming if emissions are reduced. The research highlights that approximately one-third of global warming so far is due to methane, despite its lower overall concentration compared to CO2. Siberian permafrost contains vast amounts of plant matter, which decompose into greenhouse gases when thawed by increasingly warm and moist conditions. Despite methane sources including livestock and industrial processes, the natural leakage from thawing permafrost is a growing concern for climate scientists.
