A coalition of Serbian opposition parties, known as the Platform for European Serbia, has accused the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) of providing misleading information to the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission. The opposition alleges the SNS misrepresented the implementation of recommendations regarding electoral reforms. Specifically, they claim the SNS falsely presented a dialogue with the opposition as being constructive and comprehensive, when in reality, it was superficial. The Platform asserts this deception aims to legitimize recent electoral law changes despite ongoing concerns about fairness and democratic standards. They have submitted evidence to the Venice Commission detailing discrepancies between the SNS’s reports and the actual situation on the ground. The opposition groups are seeking a reassessment of Serbia’s electoral process by the Venice Commission based on this new information. This accusation comes amidst heightened political tensions in Serbia ahead of upcoming elections.
