Seven gold miners died Wednesday in two separate landslides at illegal mining sites in the Saraya department of the Kédougou region of Senegal. The first incident in Ségueko, Bembou commune, buried seven miners, most of whom were Burkinabè nationals, following a sand collapse; only one was rescued with serious injuries. Authorities attribute the first disaster to unstable ground conditions worsened by heavy rains and unregulated excavations. Hours later, a second collapse at Sékhoto, Missirah Sirimana commune, killed 20-year-old Ibrahima Cissé after a crater caved in. Gendarmerie are investigating the causes of both tragedies, which highlight the extreme dangers associated with unsafe artisanal gold mining, particularly during the rainy season. These incidents renew concerns about safety regulations and oversight in the region's informal gold mining sector.
