New Zealand’s “confirmation of payee” system, designed to prevent payment scams, is expanding beyond traditional banks. The Anti-Scam Alliance will now include fintech companies and other non-bank payment providers within the scheme. This expansion aims to offer wider protection to consumers against fraudulent transactions occurring through various payment platforms. Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Cameron Brewer announced the move, highlighting its synergy with recent amendments to the Fair Trading Act. These Act changes empower online service providers to swiftly remove suspected scam content, minimizing potential financial losses for users. The combined effort seeks to proactively combat the increasing prevalence of online scams and safeguard New Zealanders from financial harm. The initiative represents a collaborative approach between government and the financial sector to enhance consumer protection in the digital landscape.
